If you are talking about Manhattan, its going to be pretty expensive. If I were by myself, I would stay in a hostel like American International. A bed is like 50 bucks, you get lockers for your valuables, restrooms are clean, and you get fresh towels. People who stay there are mostly European tourists or poor students/travellers.
