W/o having much knowledge on this subject, I'd use my gut feeling. I'd just start looking for a job somewhere else.

First of all, the person can show up there to boot. Second, even if he/she doesn't show up, why live in fear?

I'd start looking for job and leave when I get similar or better offer.
