Nepalese people currently working and living in developed countries, including me, tend to take things here for granted at times. When you get to watch videos like this we should consider ourselves rather fortunate.
Politicians in Nepal publicly expressing their intent to bar recruitment of Gurkhas is nothing but a nationalistic-sounding rhetoric. Gurkhas recruitment is perhaps the oldest and the most stable form of foreign employment in the nation's history and these jobs even provide decent benefits and pensions. As a testament to that, visit places like Dharan, Chitwan, and Pokhara. These relatively more prosperous areas of Nepal can be directly attributed to the Gurkhas and you can really see the trickle-down effect there.
When politicians say Gurkhas should not serve in foreign armies, that just reveals their myopic view. All adults should be allowed to decide their own career paths so that they can provide for their family.
If a day comes when foreign employment should become illegal in Nepal, then the workers that need to be rescued first would be the female sex-workers in red light areas in India and the ones working in sub-human conditions in the Gulf countries. But above all, putting the rhetorics aside the one and only thing that the Nepali politicians need to be doing is fostering a stable government and adopting policies that can create well-paying jobs at home itself. A decently paying job is all every foreign-bound Nepali is after.
