one of the best definitions i have seen from a user on facebook:

a 'bandh' is a state of being that is increasingly becoming the norm in Nepal. It is a state of handicap that brings life in the entire city/ country to a grinding halt inflicted by a group of people making some 'demands'. A 'bandh' - closure (in that no automobilies (including bicycles) are allowed on the streets, shops have to remin closed, and life in general comes to a standstill) happens when some 'group' holds the general populatino hostage through the use of threats of violence. Typically, goons and thugs, who gain a sense of 'purpose' in their otherwise miserable lives, gather at major intersections and thoroughfares to enforce the bandh. Some poor bicyclist or motobiker will get beaten, their bike will be smashed, some tires will be burnt, and thats about all. The 'leaders' who the demands are targetted are never held accountable or are 'targetted'. So its a useless inconvenience heaped on the general population without achiving any goal at all. In other words its a royal pain in the arse. What it IS good for is preventing addtional pollution and forcing healty habits through walking to work.
