Flood triggered by Annapurna avalanche wreaks havoc in Kaski; 13 dead bodies found so far, over 50 missing

An avalanche in Annapurna mountain range triggered massive flood in Seti River in Kaski on Saturday, killing at least 13 people and destroying human settlements along with bridges and crops in a vast area.

Thirteen dead bodies have been recovered so far and the search for others is underway, according to District Police Office Kaski. The death toll is expected to rise given the extent of the floods. Among the missing are three foreign tourists.

The avalanche was reported at around 9 am. The sudden flood swept several houses including hotels at Kharapani area apart from four trucks, one tractor and a bus.

Local news reports described a sense of terror among the residents as the swollen Seti swept everything on the riverbanks. The Kaski local administration has issued an alert, asking the residents to move towards safety.

Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and the Nepal Police personnel along with Red Cross officials are involved in rescue works at different places. Two army helicopters have been sent from Kathmandu to rescue the victims.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has directed the security agencies to effectively mobilise search and rescue officials in the affected areas. He also asked them to make necessary arrangements for the re resettlement of the displaced people. nepalnews.com
