everytime i had a work permit with new expiration date i had to get one because they like to give u the liscense exact to that date.althought my i20 showed time for 4 years they would go by what it says on the work permit.  so i have like bundle of driver liscense in few years.  few times i had temporary work permits for like 3 months ( they used to do that around 2005) and they only gave me liscence for 3 months. it is such a hassle and everytime i went there the burden to educate them about my legal status was on me. plus i would have to pay 20 something bucks  for nothing.  sometimes they wanted to see the original i94, sometimes, the original passport sometimes i just left after waiting for hours. anyway, the people were nice and no such incidents like above but wish it was little easier for legals to get the liscence.
