Upgrading iPhone 4 while preserving baseband is possible. Google it.
If you upgrade without preserving your baseband your phone will be locked and you might have to wait for new unlock software or hardware. Not even sure if it will ever come out.
I suggest you to stick with ios 4 if you dont want to use it as iPod. Or, upgrade while preserving your baseband.
