  You are missing my point.
I am talking about Linux desktops not server. Of course linux servers are still great because they they dont use X11 components.
Just go look at KDE 4, Unity, Gnome 3, they are abysimal. Gnome 2 is still great though and I regularly use it at my work .
But the support has ended so noone will be actively developing it apart from some half arsed forks.
I was a linux+windows user, now I am a mac+windows+linux user, I use windows for entertainment and mac for development and linux at work.
Oh and I use a Hackintosh (core i5+8GB =$400!) so your hardware restricitions do not apply.

If you love DOS so you should like doing stuff in terminal. Linux terminal is without any doubt better than windows.

If you are master of batch script, you will of course love more powerful shell script, in linux and mac.
I like you used to wonder why all the top class developers I know use a Mac (folks at Google and Twitter),
now I realize, Terminal is the biggest reason.
For example watch the awesome Ryan Dahl on node.js, I think one would struggle to do something like that on windows.
