To fit in or stand out, that is the question. The rule-of-thumb I follow is stand out whenever you can and fit in when you must. I apply this to most situations in life - whether in Nepal or in America.

"Why are we so scared? What is the worst thing that could happen to us in America?"

We are scared because we are sissies at heart. We are scared of the alternatives to a life in America or Europe. Deep down we are afraid of loosing the comfort of our jobs and lifestyles in America and packing our bags for the dusty life in Nepal. We pee in our pants at the thought of not finding a technical job in Nepal in an office with a coffee machine, a fat salary and an American management culture. We are weaklings who cant handle even the mildest form of aggression in Nepal's top down culture but we will kneel and pray before the explicit and implicit social and cultural aggression of foreigners in the countries we currently live in. We are scared of power-cuts and other inconveniences in Nepal. We are scared of the dust and chaotic traffic. It is this fear that has us enslaved to America (or whatever host country we are living in) forcing us to do the most ridiculous things to fit in.

In the end, immigration doth make cowards of us all.
