You need to be in Canada for 3 years out of 5 years to maintain your PR status, conditions apply.
If you cross more than 3 years and go back to Canada, you cannot renew your PR. you need to apply for Citizenship directly so technically speaking you can remain out of Canada upto a day less than 5 years, still conditions apply, you need to go through immigration lawyers to sort it out.
Believe it or not, Canada is GOOD. You get life here which you will always miss in US.
