I liked what you are saying and found myself nodding my head. 

And then I thought: why can't we do both?

We need to be specialists in our field and we can contribute from there. And at the same time there can be a think-tank to coordinate all of us towards a greater goal. I think both can happen without it contradicting, no? Isn't that the essence of synergy? How we can all take our different strengths to build something greater than any one of us could build?
