Some misplaced patriots may be up in arms about this but I don't think it is wrong to accept reality. When you think about Nepal, it may conjure up a lot of good memories and feeling of connections to friends and families but we don't generally proceed further to accept few bitter truth about why Nepal is still the way it is.

There is utter waste of resources in a country that lacks resources.
There is a culture of lavish show off, which cannot be good for anyone. Even ones without resources are supposed to do everything like they can afford it.

What kind of backward culture is that which asks for this kind of commitment?

In the end it all boils down to religion and culture. Culture says this has to be done because of religious beliefs.

The old generation are still visciously tied to the above culture of waste and show off. In order to move forward it is upto the new generation to refuse to practice such nonsense customs.

The grass root movement for change has to come from religious grounds by questioning religious practices. Only then we can amend the way we live our lives and stop doing the unnecessary things we do.
