Campus chief Palikhe, two security guards shot dead
Suspected Maoist insurgents have shot dead chief of Jana Priya Campus, Ganeshman Palikhe, and his two security guards near Prithvi Chowk in the western town of Pokhara Sunday afternoon.
According to reports, some half a dozen assailants were waiting the 62-year-old renowned social worker and educationist Palikhe outside his house. They shot and killed Palikhe and his two security guards from close range and later fled in three motorbikes. One of the security guards was from Nepal Police while the another was from the Armed Police Force.
It could not be known if the security guards retaliated during the attack.
Local administration had provided security cover to Palikhe after he received threats from the Maoists nearly four months ago. The pro-Maoist student body, Akhil Krantikari, had alleged Palikhe of defying their call to close down educational institutions in the past and handing over one of their colleagues to police.
Nobody had claimed responsibility for the attack till late Sunday.
Former campus chief of Prithvi Narayan Campus in Pokhara, Palikhe was a well-known social worker. He had agreed to serve as campus chief of the non-profit, public sector Jana Priya Campus as per the request of the local community, according to reports.
Only last week, suspected Maoists shot and seriously injured district president of royalist Rastriya Prajatantra party (RPP) of Kaski district, Chhetra Bahadur KC, in Pokhara. He later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment in Kathmandu.
