Dr Kanchho,
I understand your passion for science and absolutely commend you for it. I think what the article is trying to convey is the fact that "Economically" it doesn't quite add up. I agree that people who are doing Ph.D. are passionate about science and are there to make important breakthroughs rather than  money. While it is noble to pursue your passion, it is also important to keep a reality check. Have you met post-docs that are genuinely happy? After 5-9 years of Ph.D. (I am talking only about biological sciences here), their salary as a post-doc is pegged with NIH which is around 35K and change. Most of them at this point have family with kids. I just wanted to share the other side of the story. Best of luck to you!
