If you are thinking about going back with a PhD, don't even think about working. Join a PhD progam.
I don't think PhD is about money, its about research. If you love your field and want to make an impact, then PhD is the way to go. But make sure you absolutely love your field--more than money and honey! If you want to do PhD for a higher salary, you will lose time and money.
