Poor people are fat

Gotta love the Americas. In a recent survey, it was found that poor people are fatter than their richer counterparts; and it makes sense! Fresh vegetables, fruits and healthy food is so expensive compared to the fat ladden 59c a pound chicken and other red meat on sale as Manager's special.

Coming from Nepal where we're used to seeing skinny people who don't get enough to eat and rich maarwaadis and sahujis are inherently fat due to their inheritance of loads of money and the grandeur of luxurious 84 dishes (chaurashi byanjan). Perhaps it's the hindu way of things to get fat if one is rich by adhering to the godly ways of food intake if one can afford it. If one can't afford the chaurashi byanjan then they have no option but to stick to the basic poor man's diet of dhido.

Consequently it is not surprising that the concept of Buffet restaurant is not popular among restauranteers in Nepal. It may be tried out on an experimental basis on a niche rich class in Nepal by keeping the cost at a higher range.

Times have changed, the richer class is increasing in Nepal. More have access to cars than they did 10 year ago. But the roads are at a constant thus literally driving out potential drivers from the streets to greener pasteurs. Greener pastures of the neighbouring India, then the middle east, then Australia and UK and then finally the US the land of peace, richness and luxury where poor people can get fat. The order of the immigration shows their unspoken classes in the leftover Nepali society which make their living from remittance.

You can find patches of settlements in the villages to cities which are funded by remittance. A small village in remote Nepal (village name withheld for security reasons) boasts 20% of it's youth migrated to India to work. Another village closer to transportation has 15% of it's youth migrated to the Middle East. An advertisement in Kathmandu is soliciting workers to Doha for Rs. 12,000 a month.

Dinner for two with wine and dine in a mediocre restaurant in the US costs that amount but people are flocking to get visa to make that much a month leaving behind their beloved family so they can feed their beloved family from afar. It is a world of ironies.

Here I am trying to combine the Managers special with the avocado to appear skinny and successful instead of giving out the impression of being a poor fat bastard.

Happy Friday
