            ANA Election 2011 Update

            Dear All,

            As you all know, the ANA Election Commission was formed by a mandate from the ANA General Body. Likewise, a Membership Verification Team was constituted on the same day by the General Body. The Membership Verification Team provided a report of its findings and a list of valid      members on June 8, 2011. Subsequently, the Election Commission came up with the following deadline for filing of nominations:
            ·

                *  Nomination Filing Deadline: Friday, June 10, 2011
                * First of list of eligible voters and nominees to be published, Sunday, June 12, 2011
                * Final list of eligible voters and nominees to be published, Tuesday June 14, 2011
                * Ballots to be mailed, Thursday, June 16, 2011
                * Ballots to be received by Friday, July 1, 2011
                * Vote counted on July 4, 2011 at the ANA Convention Site

            In order to conduct a free and fair election, the Election Commission rented a UPS mailbox, close to the upcoming convention site in Chantilly, VA. The ballots were to be opened at the convention site on July 4th.

            The election committee was delayed in publishing the list of the candidates by one day because of the weekend and also due to the confusion related to the membership list. It seemed like a few paid members’ names were missing from the list which the ANA Executive Board would provide to the election committee after consulting with the membership verification committee. However, to date no updates have been provided. Therefore, I Raja      Prasad Upadhyay, as the Chair of the Election Committee, consider the membership list published by the ANA Membership Verification Committee to be a full and final list. Accordingly, verification has been done against this list.

            The election commission has received nominations for the post of the following positions within the stipulated time frame:

            Nominees for the position of the President:

                * Mr. Dhiren Gurung, TX (Seconded by Mr. Murali Adhikari and Mr. Arjun Mainali)
                * Mr. Pralhad KC, MA (Seconded by Dr. Hari Sharma, Mr. Girija Gautam and Dr. Ambika Adhikari)
                * Mr. H. B. Bhandari (Seconded by Mr. Arjun Hamal, and Mr. Bharat Baraili)

            Nominees for the position of Vice President:

                * Mr. Roger Adhikari, CA (Seconded by Mr. Pralhad KC, and Dr. Ambika Adhikari)
                * Mr. Sambhu Dhungana, CA (withdrawn on 06/09/11)
                * Mr. Robin Thapa, MD (Seconded by Khem Bhattachan and Bishwa Raj Thapa)

            Nominees for the position of General Secretary:

                * Bijay Thapa, MD (Seconded by Ms. Shashi KC and Mr. Binaya Aryal)
                * Radha Basnyat, CANADA (Seconded by Dr. Ambika Adhikari, and Mr. Pralhad KC)

            Nominees for the position of Treasurer:

                * Dr. Gambhir M. Shrestha, FL (Seconded by Mr. Sambhu Dhungana and Mr. Pralhad KC)
                * Mr. Jangbu Sherpa, MA (Seconded by Mr. Binaya Aryal, and Mr. Bijay Thapa)

            Nominees for the position of Information Director

                * Kumar Deuja, MD (Seconded by Mr. Bishwa Raj Thapa, Mr. Khem Bhattachan)
                * Dr. Tulasi Joshi, WV (Seconded by Dr. Ambika Adhikari, Mr. Roger Adhikari)

            The candidacy of these nominees was verified against the membership list published by the Membership Verification Committee and the final list of candidates is as follows:

                * President: Prahlad KC
                * Vice President: Roger Adhikari
                * General Secretary: Radha Basnyat
                * Treasurer: Dr. Gambhir M. Shrestha
                *  Information Director: Dr. Tulasi Joshi

            Other candidates were disqualified because their names were not in the membership list provided by the Membership Verification Committee. As per by-laws of ANA, to be nominated for a position a person must be a member of the association for at least a year and must be an executive board member for at least one year.

            Since, only one valid candidacy could be verified for each position, as the chairman of the ANA Election Commission, I declare those candidates as elected officers for the term July 2011 – June 2013.

            I would like to thank the ANA Members and the Executive Board for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Election Committee Chair. It was a privilege to work for ANA and bring this issue to closure. A postponement of election is neither desirable nor necessary or tolerable to me, as I was charged with the job of conducting the election. It is in keeping with ANA tradition for the last 28 years.

            Thank you.

            Sincerely,
            Raja Prasad Upadhyay
            Election Committee Chair
            Association of Nepalis in Americas
