The Supreme Court Wednesday announced 18 months jail sentence along with a penalty of Rs 20.3 million to former minister and Nepali Congress leader Chiranjivi Wagle, convicting him in a graft case.

A division bench of Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha and justice Khil Raj Regmi announced the final verdict in Wagle’s case.

In 2004, the Special Court had handed down two-and-half-year jail sentence along with Rs 27.3 million fine, convicting in him corruption when he was a minister.

Wagle had filed a petition at the apex court challenging the lower court’s verdict and had secured bail.

The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had dragged him to court in 2002, accusing him of amassing property by misusing authority while holding a ministerial berth.

Walge is the most senior political leader to have been convicted of corruption in recent times. nepalnews.com
