I see more corruption on the pipeline...Citizenship card not necessary for voters id

The Election Commission (EC) Wednesday said it is not going to make citizenship certificates compulsory for prospective voters to have their names in the voters list, which will have photographs.

Issuing a statement, EC said the decision was taken at the suggestion of the political parties.

Identity cards provided by government authorities including land ownership certificates bearing photographs along with necessary details such as name, address and date of birth would be acceptable in the case of people who are unable to furnish citizenship certificates.

Madhesh-based parties had been opposing the EC's decision to make citizenship certificates compulsory for being enlisted in the voter list.

The EC is currently updating the voter lists in 58 municipalities for the purpose of introducing the electronic voter ID cards. The drive will be launched in other districts in the second phase.
