He first band, Waves, included Kishore on the lead guitar and himself on rhythm. The teenagers won the All Nepal Beat Contestin '74 and '76 and went on to play at clubs, including the Park Restaurant at Ratna Park, which was the only venue for live music at the time. Brotherhood was his next band through which his identity as a drummer picked up. Playing Police, Eagles as well as Afro band covers, the brothers performed at the Yak & Yeti for almost half a decade. In 1981 he left for the United States to pursue a degree in filmmaking and two years later was offered a scholarship at Berklee College of Music, from where he went on to earn his Bachelors Degree in Jazz and Contemporary music. He calls his experience at Berklee "a biggie" and "eye opening." He then returned to Nepal at the end of '92 and joined Free Association – a trio that also included Chris Masand and Jeff. The next few years of his life were spent on his other passion, filmmaking. However, he did re-enter the music scene with his solo pop album Pokharel in 2002. At present, he is a member of Equinox, which he started as a "fort" for his former students and apprentices. He recalls his most memorable performance to be the three-day Brotherhood Comeback Concert at City Hall in 1984, which was, "musically very satisfying."

Reminiscing about the old days, he remembers the difficulties of having to do without good quality equipment and settling for "junk". Thankfully, those days are gone, and now his jamming room contains high quality stuff like a Fender Squire electric guitar, Yamaha drums and Behringer amp.

"Music in general has grown tremendously," he says, referring to the current musical scene in Nepal. "Like everything else, there are good and bad aspects," he states. The "good" is the amount of exposure that young musicians are able to get through competitions and the media. "Music is also more accessible to kids because of the internet and other facilities," he says. However, the "bad" includes the decrease in the quality of music that is being produced today. "With more than 80 studios in the valley, it is becoming too easy. There's more style than substance," he comments. "Don't look for short-cuts. Work hard. Listen to all kinds of music; don't confine yourself in a box. Also learn the grammar of music, that is, learning music systematically. There's no need to rush. Try to find your own voice and most important of all, be a good human being."
