Narane,

Thanks for the link and there is good possibility for this major earthquake in China to be induced by the hydro-dam and this can serve as good example of human activities induced earthquake. What you need to understand is that earthquake is all realted about energy balance and the earth is dynamic. If you add large amount of mass or remove from there this will certainly disturb the balance of earth's crust. If you add more mass on the surface then the crust tends to bend down and if you remove the it tends to bend up. In both cases it will release energy which will cause the earthquake. And if there is presence of discontinuities (faults) as in the case of China it will further facilitate the movement of earth's crust and realese higher amount of energy and ultimately bigger earthquake. Now, the take home lesson for us in Nepal will be think carefully while planning mega projects. Although I don't believe that our politicians or bureaucrats or whoever involved will make Koshi Hydro-dam to implement in near future; but the engineers and planners need to think carefully what amount of subsidence will be created by the proposed dam and what scale earthquake it can create as we have several active thrust (faults) system throughout the Himalayan range.
