Here is my opinion;
If you are working in adjoining state, they may not deduct state tax you are working but will withheld for the state you are residing.

You reside in two different state in the tax year 2009. You will be getting two or more W-2 forms and your state withholding are from two states.

If you do online tax it usually asks,  did you reside whole year or partially , and will prompt you to put the date you reside in each states. It will automatically calculate your refund from each state. Couple year ago helped out of state tax, California and other.  He got refund from each state.  My personal opinion is, did you check online , how it works? Then you ask question what happened?
You trying to avoid filing one of the state tax, which is not a good idea, most of the case you may end up getting refunds.
Am I clear or got what you needed?
