According to this timing, all the four marathoners beat the world record of 2 hours 3 minutes 59 seconds set by Haile Gabrselassie in Berlin marathon. However, technical committee later discovered that the distance, which should have been 42.195 km, was shorter by 5 kilometers.
It later emerged that Bhandari 'beat the record' having run only 35 kilometres instead of 42 as organisers discovered the course had been some seven kilometres shorter than it should have been.
The organisers decided against publishing the timings in a meeting in the afternoon.
