To Ved and others,

I agree with you that caste cannot be wiped away. Bad habits die hard and this is a centuries old bad habit that will no doubt take a while to be wiped out of our minds.

Caste differences have always popped up in sajha and I have tried my best to be lenient on sporadic outbursts. But when the issue begins to take up center stage on the forefront of every discussion, then I have to step in to salvage the spirit of sajha - that of providing help to other Nepalis by sharing of information.

Every so often I have to remind our friends in sajha that strong belief in caste system is very old school and not befitting the current age we live in.

I believe that we are human beings first, then Asian, then Nepalese, then within our ethnic caste network, and in that order. Humanity comes before anything else and we are all Nepalese before any caste, and it has to come before that. Let us not lose our humanity in our effort to prove our caste is better than being human!

Below is a post on the same subject made few months back. Well... I hope we can all be Nepalese - Asians with a good sense of Humanity first. Then we can all appreciate each others different ethnic backgrounds without having to prove who is better than who.

11/8/2009: Here's a thread from 2 years back that I want to bring to your attention

http://sajha.com/sajha/html/openThread.cfm?threadid=51818#504849

In
historical times, it makes sense for a tribe to stick together and have
self serving prejudices against other tribes to protect themselves from
external extremities.

In this day and age, a person's worth is determined by the sum total of
his or her abilities. Unfortunately a lot of people are blinded by
their own self serving prejudices to feel superior about themselves and
their own group of people.

Most
of the visitors in sajha have a good educational background and we need
to look beyond our own individual castes in order to plant the seed for
a better equal Nepal. Few posters enjoy playing on the inter caste
insecurities that is deeply rooted amongst many of us. We need to rise
above and beyond these insignificant instigations and provocations that
are meant to antagonize and aggravate the castist insecurities that is
imbibed within us by the society we grew up in.

We are sum total
of our own personal abilities and any success these instigations get in
arousing our wrongful senses only help to fuel the fire of our dissent
and differences to separate us. We Nepalese are a helpful bunch as we
can see by many helpful threads within and beyond sajha. We need to
stop being defensive at these provocations. Only when we can laugh at
these intolerant instigations will we be able to rise above the castist
environment that is promoted by few individuals or groups that benefit
by breaking up the Nepalese into separate groups.
