The
first 'Shrestha's came from the southern part of  India
about 120 years ago and then they started mixing up with the Newars.
Newars are the original settlers of Kathmandu two thousand years ago.
The original Newars during the 'Malla' kal are Malla, Maharjan,
Manandhar, Dandol, Singh have a historical values to this day. They are
the ones who built the beautiful scuptures and temples which you can
see in Kathmandu. In Nepal there is a caste which are called
'Untouchables' and their last names are Damai, Sarki, kumai, Chyame
etc. In the last few decades, these lower caste people have been using
'Shrestha' as their last name. This is the main reason why there are so
many people who have their last name as 'Shrestha'. To be noted here ,
80 % of Shrestha's who claim to be Newars can't even speak the languag.
