I did some research this time, asking questions to dozens of Newars who had their last name "Maharjan" , "Dangol", "Manandhar", "Shakya".

The mojority of people who have "Maharjan", "Dangol", "Manandhar", "Shakya" as last names agree that "Shrestha", "Pradhan" and "Vaidya" are not Newars. They say that living in Kathmandu for a long time does not automatically make them Newars.

According to the survey with Maharjans, it is extremely difficult to have a marrital relationship between a Shrestha and a Maharjan. Shresthas' would always seek to have a relation with Shresthas or Pradhans or Vaidyas. It is also hard to believe that 90% of Shresthas don't speak the Newari language at all. The language which Maharjans claim the only mother language their ancestors spoke for hundreds of years.

Are Shresthas really Newars ? Or did they emerge from tranformation of lower caste people decades ago?
