PLA men assults villagers
Cadres of the Maoist affiliated People's Liberation Army (PLA) assaulted some three dozen villagers in Kailali, Annapurna Post daily reported.

About 200 PLA cadres of Bahubir Yoddha Brigade in Sahajpur came out of their cantonments last Thursday and assaulted the villagers, the report says.

The incident came into light only after three days, as the Maoist combatants had warned the villagers not to reveal the incident to the police or journalists.

'We have been threatened to be killed if we inform (of the incident) the media or the police,' a youth, who prefers to be anonymous said.

The incident started after a brawl at a local liquor shop in the village.

According to the report, some Maoist combatants had gone to drink liquor in the village on Thursday.

Seeing new faces, a local youth asked where they had come from. The combatants in turn questioned the youth, who he was to inquire about them.

As the quarreling grew, they vandalised the counter of the shop. They assaulted the youths in the shop and the shopkeeper after shopkeeper Bhim Saud demanded for a compensation of the damaged counter.

Few hours later, other PLA men came to the village and assaulted about three dozen villagers.

'We called the cantonment, and they told us to detain the combatants involved in the brawl, but after a few minutes they came in large numbers and started assaulting whoever they could find in the village,' said Bir Bahadur Saud of Shantipur.

The cantonment is at about a 25 minute walk from the village.

However, brigade commander of Bahubir Yoddha Brigade Saugat refuted the allegations saying the villagers had assaulted the PLA men instead.

'The villagers assaulted our friends who had gone to find some chicken,' Saugat said. 'They were eating fish and not liquor.' nepalnews.com
