Singh no stranger to crime

Kantipur Report KATHMANDU, Aug 9 - Biplab
Man Singh, whose car mowed down six pedestrians to death on Thursday,
has been found to have been involved in several criminal activities in
the past. If police record is anything to go by, Singh was not only an
alcoholic but also a user of contraband drugs. Only a year ago, Singh
was arrested for possessing brown sugar, but subsequently released on a
bail of Rs. 20,000.

Singh
was also arrested along with two other persons with sharp-edged weapons
in connection with disruptive activities in July, 2008. This time, he
left police custody on a bail of Rs. 28,000. Singh, who was a regular
visitor of casinos and dance restaurants, was also reportedly involved
in gang fights in the capital.

Under
the influence of alcohol, Singh's car had early on Wednesday crushed
six people, including five Indian nationals, to death in one of the
deadliest road accident in the capital.

Indian
national Deepak Gupta, who was critically injured in the accident, is
undergoing treatment at Neuro Hospital, Bansbari. Doctor said his
condition is improving.

On
Friday, Kathmandu District Court allowed the government prosecutors to
keep Singh in custody for five more days for further investigation.

If
prosecuted under Section 161(1) of the Act, Singh may face life
imprisonment for homicide. The Act prohibits drunken-driving and has
additional punishment for the same.
