The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed cases of H1N1 Influenza 09 in a number of countries throughout the world, including Nepal. For a list of these countries, visit the WHO website. We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in Nepal due to the uncertain political and security situation.

Pay close attention to your security at all times and monitor the media and other local sources for information about possible new safety or security risks.

The resignation of the Prime Minister of Nepal on 4 May 2009 has increased political tensions and the security situation remains unpredictable.

Political rallies in many parts of Nepal have resulted in outbreaks of violence and the detonation of explosive devices. You are strongly urged to avoid demonstrations, political rallies and large gatherings throughout Nepal as they may turn violent. Demonstrations and bandhs (strikes) occur without notice and can cause major traffic disruptions and shut down all public transport.

Shortages of essential supplies (food, water, fuel, gas and kerosene for cooking) can occur with limited notice. Black out (or load shedding) periods can have a significant impact on services, including in major tourist destinations. Before travelling, check that your tour operator or hotel will be able to provide an acceptable level of service and security.

Extortionists continue to approach trekkers and climbers demanding 'donations' or 'taxes'. Victims have been assaulted, detained or threatened with violence until they pay.

Travel Warning remains in effect because the Department of State continues to be concerned about the security situation in Nepal. Despite the April 2008 elections, various groups aiming to advance political agendas continue to commit extortions, abductions and killings.

In the southern Terai plains, more than 40 armed groups, some in pursuit of independence or autonomy and others composed mainly of opportunistic criminal elements, piggybacked on a popular uprising in 2007. Since 2008, competing factions in the Terai clashed with the Maoists, hill-origin Nepalese, police, and each other, exacerbating unrest in the southern Terai plains since 2008. These clashes instigated numerous strikes, demonstrations, and Indo-Nepal border closures.

Americans traveling to Nepal should be aware of the potential for large or violent demonstrations. Frequently, demonstrators burn vehicles, throw rocks at passing motorists, and burn tires to block traffic.

Bandhs in the Terai region of Nepal also occur and have been known to last for several weeks, causing acute shortages of daily food supplies and bringing vehicular traffic to a complete halt. Individuals have been reported kidnapped or killed for not complying with the bandhs in the region.

Political tensions in Nepal remain high. In light of this, you should avoid large gatherings and demonstrations. Bandhs (shutdowns), rallies and demonstrations can cause widespread disruption and are often called at short notice, leaving transport severely disrupted and blocking roads and major highways.
