Sidster, most victims of any type of abuse can easily be manipulated and just stay in the same cycle. These type of people needs whole bunch of counselor to lead a normal life.Since she has been constantly abused by the time she came from Nepal, i doubt she has same set of mind frame like other people  like you and me who didn't go through this trauma.
Since you are questioning her ability,  i would like to remind is it is easier to be said than done.
