Dude, it's hard to get reinstated, better not apply since it's been 2 yrs as u said. U're supposed to apply within 3 months after u got out of status. Getting an I 20 from a college and going to Mexico, Canada or abroad is an option but u might be stopped at the border or port of entry and denied entry.(depends why u got out of status and gotta have a reasonable documented proof.) If there is any chance of going back to the old school and talking to the DSO (International advisor), u can do that.(That's if u had never applied for reinstatement). What they do is, until u apply, the DSO has ur SEVIS listed as reinstatement pending and in one click they can clear it out). This happened to me after more than a year of being out of status. I went back to the school and graduated. Since u never went to school after u got out of status, there is less chances ( I never left school, though I was out of status.) But still talking with ur DSO is not a big deal, do it, might help u.
