Clarify confusion by video: UNMIN to Maoists

Kantipur Report
KATHMANDU, May 10 - United Nations Mission in
Nepal (UNMIN) chief Karen Landgren told senior Maoist leader Dr. Baburam
Bhattarai on Sunday that the Unified CPN (Maoist) should clarify the confusion
created by the recently publicised video to the international community.
In the video that was shot in Januarya, 2008, before the
Constituent Assembly elections, Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal is seen
babbling out that the number of Maoist combatants was inflated during the UNMIN
verification.
In the meeting at Dr. Bhattarai’s official residence in Pulchowk today,
Landgren said that the international community as well as UNMIN is concerned
about the controversial video tape in which Dahal says that the party leadership
shrewdly made up the number of Maoist combatants from 7,000 to 35,000, and got
21,000 of the recognised by UNMIN.
She also discussed the Nepali Congress demands of re-verification of the
Maoist People’s Liberation Army in the wake of the release of the video.
Saying the video has no relevance at present, Dr. Bhattarai, in response,
stated that the issue of re-verification is insignificant and impossible.
In the meeting, the Maoist think tank expressed the party’s commitment to
the peace process though the Maoists pulled out from the government.
