I am glad you understand the importance of good credit, which means you have already taken the first step towards building a great credit score. Many people don't even realize this. I don't think there is a quick fix to improve a credit score. Your credit score is based on several factors such as - Amount of debt, Amount of new credit, Payment history, Length of credit history. You have control on all factors except the Length of credit history, which builds over time. The federal government has mandated all 3 credit bureaus to provide a free credit report (Not the credit score) once in every year. First thing you want to do is go to www.annualcreditreport.com to get your government mandated free credit report (Note: www.freecreditreport.com is NOT free). Check for any discrepancies on the report. You can also order your equifax credit score (known as FICO score) or 3-in-1 credit score at the time of ordering your free credit report or you can order it at a later time. FICO score sets you back $15.95. The credit score gives you a very good insight into your credit such as "Factors Affecting Your Score", "How Lenders See You", and "FICO Simulator". FICO Simulator is a tool that allows you to know more about what action hurts or builds your credit. Some banks or credit card companies also provide services called something like "credit score watch". This costs you more money, but you will get to know your credit score (most likely from all 3 bureaus) in a monthly or quaterly fashion.
