Gurkhas vital for Indian Army: Sood

KATHMANDU, April 6 - Indian Ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood said on Monday the Nepali citizens serving in the armed forces of India have helped to strengthen relationship between India and Nepal.

Inaugurating the 21st annual welfare meeting of Indian Army-Ex Servicemen's Welfare Organisation in Nepal (IEWON), he said Nepali citizens are an essential part of Indian Armed Forces and this bond has further helped strengthen the traditional warm relationship between the two countries. He also said that every year the Indian government spends Rs. 16 billion in terms of pension and welfare to the ex-servicemen.

There are more than 100,000 Ex-servicemen of Indian Armed Forces settled in Nepal and around 40,000 Nepalis are currently serving Armed Forces of India. Ambassador Sood said this year the Indian government has allocated projects worth to Rs. 80 million for solar electrification in Chitwan and Bhojpur districts.

The six-day meeting of IEWON will discuss about customs duty exemption to Nepal domiciled Indian Army Ex-servicemen, lease of land for Pension Paying Office Butwal, canteen store department facilities and contributory health schemes for Ex-servicemen.

IEWON is a welfare organisation operating under the aegis of Embassy of India and is responsible for the welfare of all Nepal domiciled Government of India pensioners. A nine-member delegation from India led by Adjutant General Lt. Gen. Mukesh Sabharwal is also attending the meeting.
