There will be a strong chance when you apply for asylum within one year of entering the united states. However, still if u can show the strong reason and supporting documents for not able to return back to home country then you might get it. But, I think they no more accept political reasons because one of my frens asylum case was rejected couples of month before, saying that maoists are already in the peace process. It may be safe side to show caste region or whatever. you better hire one advocate and take suggestions.
