Our blood boils because of non-issues like birth place of lord Buddha but we do not care about hundreds of real issues that are hurting us. We do not have any shame about not having electricity for 18 hours, not having water, no one picking up garbage for weeks, and so many people dying in poverty and lawlessness. Did anyone write any letters or do anything about these more pressing issues? How shallow has our nationalism become?

We are happy as long as foreigners say Mt. Everest is in Nepal and Buddha was born in Nepal eventhough we live in a shit hole called Nepal. I would rather be proud to be a native of a country with 24 hour electricity, development, education, ethnic hamony, respect for each other and so on rather than birthplace of Buddha or home of Mt. Everest. Here is a piece of news about Nepal begging a foreign country to build hydro-electricity plant that makes me more ashamed than this Buddha news. Foreigners have built so many hydropower plants - Kulekhani I, II, Marsyandi, Mid-Marsyangdi, and we have not learnt anything. Does this news make you proud of birthplace of Buddha? How can we be a real independent country when we rely so much on foreign aid?

Japan to build 127 MW Upper Seti

THIRA L BHUSAL

KATHMANDU, Jan 19: The government of Japan has principally agreed to build the 127 MW (megawatts) Upper Seti hydro project situated in Tanahun district. “Representatives of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Nepal have principally agreed to build the project,” Sriranjan Lacoul, director general of the Department of Electricity Development, Ministry of Water Resources, told myrepublica.com.

However, it will be officially announced in March, when the government of Japan unveils its annual budget, he said. “For financial arrangement we have to wait till March,” Lacoul added.

The government of Japan was also involved in preparing the detail feasibility study of the project. Currently, the Nepal Electricity Authority holds the project’s survey license. This project will be built in storage-type model.

All the hydro projects in Nepal, except the Kulekhani, are run-of-the-river projects. Therefore, Nepal has been facing load-shedding crisis every year in the dry season. Run-of-the-river projects generate less power during dry seasons owing to receding water levels in the rivers. In such development projects, the government of Japan provides financial support as loan to the government of Nepal ,and later that is converted into donation amount.

“Most probably the same provision will be applied in this project as well,” a senior official from the ministry said.
