10 injured as Maoists attack protesting Bhandaris, devotees at Pashupatinath

KATHMANDU, Jan 4 - In
what appears to be intolerance and breach of the right to protest, the
cadres of the ruling CPN-Maoists have beaten up the Bhandaris, the
aides of the Pashupati priest, and other devotees in the temple
premises in Kathmandu Sunday evening.
At least ten persons have been injured after the Maoist cadres attacked
the locals and Rajbhandaris who have been agitating against the
appointment of two new priests at the holiest Hindu shrine today
evening.
According to the injured, around 100 Maoists attacked them while they were set to organise a press conference.

Harihar Man Raj Bhandari, Kedar Man Raj Bhandari and Saroj Karmacharya, among other caretakers of the temple have been injured in the attack.
Besides, a member of the state-owned Nepal Television crew,Tek Bahadur Khadka, has also been injured in the attack. The Maoist cadres launched the attack saying that they did oust the king, who was believed to the living incarnation of one of the deity of the Hindu trinity, and won't comply with the court’s order. The locals and temple Bhandaris resorted to the protest after the government appointed two Nepali priests by accepting the resignations of Ssouth Indian Bhatta brahimins who have been officitated at the temple priests since the 18th century.(Details to follow…)
