Maoist unionists freed at PM's behest: Gautam

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, Nov 29 - Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam on Saturday conceded that the government freed members of the Maoist-aligned All Nepal Security Workers' Union (ANSWU) under the direction of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

“They (ANSWU cadres) were released under the direction of PM," lamented Gautam. "I could not change the decision taken by the PM." Police Friday had arrested 15 persons, including General Secretary of ANSWU Shaligram Kafle, on the charge of attempted extortion of Rs 300,000 from Arun-Barun Services Company at Minbhawan in the capital.

The ANSWU members had also reportedly manhandled the company's supervisor Gopal Gautam and legal consultant Tulasi Parajuli. The police freed all those taken into custody later in the evening Friday.

Immediately after their release, the ANSWU members allegedly issued an ultimatum to the company's president Niraula and others to leave Kathmandu Valley within 24 hours. The ANSWU members also threatened to kill Niraula and others if they did not abide by the fiat.

Demanding security, Niraula and others on Saturday reached the residence of Home Minister Bam Dev Guatam  at Pulchowk and asked him to resign from the government if he could not provide security to the people.  In response, the Home Minister directed the police administration to take further action against the guilty. Meanwhile, the company has claimed that it had paid Rs 165,000 to ANSWU members in the past.
