It's always better to leave in good terms(2 weeks notice).

This is how it works:

 First your director/manager will open a requisition for the position and then they will ask you to apply for it. HR reps will evaluate your experience(what's on your resume) to the salary offered. If they give a green light, you'll have to go through the company's hiring process. You'll need to sign and release your background and employment verifications. On these forms you'll be asked to complete your educational and employment histories, meaning, your previous job titles + start and end  dates.
Depending on your company, the HR or they might also hire a third party to make inquiries to your previous employers to verify your given information.
