I too used to think that Mount Everest is in Nepal.  Turns out I am only half right.  Mount Everest is in Nepal.... and in China.  It is widely known that the mountain straddles both sides of the border, but I wonder if the summit too can be claimed by the both countries as falling within their sovereign region.

Well, as for China not asking Nepal's permission, I am hardly surprised.  India does not take any permission whenever they have to do something that is within Nepal or directly affects Nepal (take for instance, the building of dams), why would China?

Our government is a worse pushover than Paris Hilton's chihuahua doggie.   When the foreigners say "roll over", our respected leaders are more than eager to "summersault" higher and further than Nastia Liukin.
