PM poll on Friday

Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, Aug 11 - With the political parties unable to form a new government on national unity, the election of the Prime Minister is due to take place on Friday.

A meeting of the Constituent Assembly (CA) Task Management Committee held on Monday decided to hold the elections on Friday (August 15).

CA Chairman Subash Chandra Nemwang announced the decision to hold the Prime Minister’s elections on Friday at today’s parliamentary session of the CA.

Likewise, Nemwang also directed Acting General Secretary of the CA Manohar Bhattarai to issue notice for further procedure regarding the PM’s election.

Also today, the CA Secretariat prepared and published the electoral programmes.

As per the election schedule, the nominations for the Prime Ministerial candidacy are due to take place on Thursday.

Article 38 (2) of the Interim Constitution provides that the Prime Minister shall be elected through a majority of two-thirds of the members of the Legislature-Parliament, if consensus cannot be reached.

The CA secretariat informed that the new Prime Minister would be elected based on a vote division process if more than one candidate is registered.

On Sunday, the President had called on the CA to take initiatives for forming a new government through a vote since the CPN-Maoist, as the single largest party in the CA, failed to form a new government based on national consensus even by the extended deadline.

Today’s CA Task Management Committee has also fixed the dress code for the lawmakers. As from September 1, the CA members will have to put on a cream-colored coat while attending the session.

The committee has also decided to use the old logo of the parliament.

It has also formed a sub-committee to collect proposals of public importance.
