NC leaders divided over joining next govt

Nepali Congress (NC), the second largest party in the Constituent Assembly, appears to have been entangled in internal dispute over whether the party should join the upcoming government.

During the meeting of the central working committee (CWC) Saturday, some central leaders, who form a 'dissident faction' within the party, said that the party could play better role by staying out of the government.

According to sources, the 'dissident' leaders emphasised that NC should focus fully on constitution-making instead of being part of the government.

Those speaking against the idea of joining the government included general secretary Kul Bahadur Gurung, Govind Raj Joshi and Binay Dhoj Chand. They also suggested the party leadership to keep pressuring the Maoists to fulfill the seven-point conditions put forward by the party.

The conditions include return of lands and other properties seized by the Maoists during the insurgency and check the 'unruly' activities of their youth organisation, Young Communist League (YCL).

Today's meeting could not take any decision. The CWC meeting will resume after a couple of days, party spokesperson Arjun Narsingh K.C said. nepalnews.com July 26 08
