I once had an excourted tour of the Palace. I was shown both the first and second floor. There was the long dining table made of some heavy kind of wood, very shining and polished. I was shown the throne where the former king sat for official reception of dignitaries. On that tour, I asked if the king ever came to meet ordinary guests. At that very moment the guide said, "if you look quickly, you may see him". As I turned there in the other room I caught a glimps of Birendra passing through the hall to the next room. I was immediately escorted downstairs again. Downstairs there are many dislay cases of gifts the king had received over the years from his guests. One thing I remember well was a large jade figurine. I have recently wondered what would happen to those treasures once the king abandones the palace. Since they were gifts to Birendra, will Gyanendra be able to keep them?
