I have always found it very useful to contact the carrier themselves, explain the situation and suggest alternatives. In all cases they have made arrangements throughout the journey, such as a Hindi speaking person at transit points, etc. Hindi has worked in my case because my mother could figure it out, and hopefully this would be a part of the solution to your mother-in-law too. But this needs to be done well in advance.
