ON THE RECENT DEAL WITH THE MAOIST TERRORISM Hark Bahadur Rai

First of all, I call the Maoists terrorists and continue to do so in spite of the present bonhomie between them and the government of Nepal. No humiliatiation is greater for our ancient land that a large population is being brainwashed into seeking inspiration from the Maoist ideology.

The vicious and vile terrorist leaders BabuRam and Prachanda have trampled upon the peaceful post-1990 democracy of Nepal. The bullying of the Maoist terrorism remains undefied.; the terrorists are openly courted and feted by the present government of Nepal. There is no disgrace as bad as stooping so low to the sinister force of the Maoist terrorism. Complicit in this dishonorable acts are a certain spineless section of political parties and intelligentsia who have no courage to stand up to the Maoist terrorism.

One can gauge the depth of decay of Nepal in the surrender of political parties and Nepali people to the Maoist terrorism. The SPA people are practically fawning at the feet of the Maoist terrorism. The Nepali chutzpah has yet to find its savior.

Darker days and more suffering lie ahead for Nepal unless the head of the Maoist terrorism is smashed. It is unwise in the sense of a disaster to buy temporary peace with the Maoists because of war weariness. Let us not put monarchy at the altar of sacrifice by giving the Maoist terrorism free hand. Far from forging the unity against the Maoist terrorism, the seven parties (SPA) are going in opposite direction by accepting the terms of peace dictated by the Maoists at gunpoint. The leaders of the SPA parties are not only no match for terrorist villains like Prachanda and BabuRam but also cowardly and weak willed looser, totally unfit for ruling Nepal in a grave crisis. If there was a fighting spirit in the government of Nepal, the Maoist uprising would have been crushed eventually. That the Maoist terrorists can not be crushed militarily for good is a defeatist propaganda which is in favor of the Maoist and against the government. I do not subscribe to the defeatism when the stake is life and death struggle for Nepal between her freedom and slavery under the Maoist terrorism. The concession and give and take with the Maoist terrorism is treason to our country.

It never occurred to the Nepal army that the path of least bloodshed in this war was to eliminate the top leadership of the Maoist militia at a stroke by an overt or a covert mission. The Nepal army like the succession of the governments failed to meet the challenges of defeating the Maoist terrorism. For this to happen the government must clearly realize that the Maoist terrorism is an abomination and must be put down by the forces. Yes, I am saying this from the safety of a distant shore. People who expose the Maoist crimes have risked the maiming or death in the past. And only a few brave souls are willing to risk death by antagonizing the Maoist openly in Nepal. To them I offer my salute.

Here I wish to set questions before the military and the government of Nepal. The only honorable way to peace is by crushing the Maoist uprising. It is claimed that the government tried the military means for a decade and that the military means did not seem to work. They were not able to win the war against terror. Did the military set an elaborate covert plan in motion to eliminate the Maoist leadership? All the governments, including the one headed by the King himself, never had faith in the just cause of democracy against the Maoist insurgency. All the time there was wavering and confusion, while the Maoists were wholly focused.

After the deal of the present government with the Maoist, the scene is set for the total takeover of Nepal by the Maoist sooner or later. There is a mighty calamity awaiting Nepal. The horsemen of the apocalypse are the Maoist butchers. For all the terrorism and violence perpetrated in the last 10 years, Nepali people do not have the least understanding of the intensity of the evil of the Maoism. The rise and success of the Maoist terrorism could not have been possible without the succession of the weak and incompetent governments offering half-hearted fights and confused retreats. Only in Nepal can a ragtag group of terrorist militia grow unopposed in some sense into such a powerful organization.

Very soon the political parties will lose at worst their dwindling mass-base or at best their relevance. May be in the confusion, the populace will have to put up willingly with the curse of the Maoist takeover. In the long run, the honeymoon between the regular political parties and the Maoist will be suicidal blunder for Nepal.

As Nepal struggles with epochal anarchy, we long for towering and heroic personality to save Nepal and stamp his personality upon her future history.

The direct rule of the King of Nepal, Gyanendra, was a wasted opportunity. The King, instead of building up the popular front against the Maoist terrorists, has sadly become the victim of the popular backlash. The King was a fool without strategy. Just a fool. Remember Prachanda is a bloody criminal who dreams of usurping the throne. After the tumultuous uprising of the last April, the king appears demonized and helpless. The choicest terms of the abuse are hurled routinely against the Monarchy, while the horrendous crimes of the Maoist are barely uttered. On a scale of evil, Maoist records remains incomparable. The Maoists are infinitely more cruel and evil than all the Shah Kings put together. It was and is easy to dislodge king from power as in the last April. The Maoist terrorists, once they come to power, can be overthrown only by violent means.

Politically, it is fashionable now to trumpet the bugle of republicanism and accuse the monarchy of all the ills facing Nepal. But in the days and years to come, Nepal as a kingdom will surely look more benign in comparison with the terror and crimes committed by the Maoists which have been conveniently forgotten. If the Monarchy is toppled now, the main beneficiary will be the Maoist terrorist. There will be no stopping the hordes of Maoists from taking over the country.

It is far more dignified for Nepali to live in constitutional monarchy than to rot like pigs under the brutal dictatorship of the Maoist terrorists. Where are the followers of the 1990 constitution? If the champions of the constitutional arrangements of the 1990 sigh and give up before the relentless attack of the Maoist terrorists, Nepal will for ever burn in the inferno of the most despicable communism run by the Maoist thugs. The followers of the Constitutional Monarchy, rise up.

We can save Nepal from the fiendish hands of the Maoist terrorist. Let noone forget that the growth of the Maoists was due to the weak government and some section of poor and downtrodden Nepali people identifying with the Maoists as social liberators. If the people of Nepal see through the dark and ugly face of the Maoism, they will never side with the Maoism against the Monarchy. The loss of propaganda war to the Maoists by the Nepal governments can be arrested and even reversed.

Only at the total destruction of the Maoist terrorism will the eternal flower of democracy bloom in Nepal. The republic is a Maoist agenda. Let there be only minimal presence of the terrorists in the constituent assembly . How can we let the murderer and criminal Maoists frame the constitution? The constitution is a sacred document. Let no foul hand smear it with blood. The people drafting the constitution should come from the noble and ideal stock of the nation. We must defeat the mad and fanatical forces of the Maoist terrorism.
