Two things:
1) As you pointed out, in a patriarchal society like ours, fathers usually have the last say or the only say--I can confidently say that it's not always the case in Modern Nepal these days as things are changing and I am not saying this with reference to few metropolitans and big cities. There are quite a lot henpecked hubbies who think otherwise or who are made to think otherwise HAHAHA. But jokes apart, things are changing, however slowly but surely, with women coming to the family picture as educated, career-oriented, working professionals and I see this change as a trend-setter which is here to stay. Gone are the days when fathers used to earn and mothers used to take care of the household chores--when fathers used to think that they are the lead and women come second after them. With market getting competitive and commercial and 'mahangi' skyrocketing, i think both men and women have started to realize that they both need to work to make sure they earn a good living for themselves and their kids. While the status quo in some part of the country is still no different than what it used to be decades ago, with awareness and education, we are moving towards the just society--gender wise and caste or color wise--that we craved for a long time. I don't have a shred of doubt about it.
2) No I wouldn't say my grandfather was the only stupid even if he revered his king as a demi-god. We are the reflection of our society and it was that society, of which he was just a part, which saw king as a god in human figure. Things have changed now. Our society is enlightened for what it's worth and majority of us, who regard kings as mere humans (and hence prone to errors and lack of judgment), are the reflection of the very society we are living in today. In retrospect, I do understand the situation of royals as it once was and that is exactly why I believe the situation have changed to what it is at present. So no more "god bless king and queen". God bless us living beings (if there is such thing called god that is :P)
