@sangifroid all the makers have the specific lens mount that only accepts the lenses designed by the makers itself.
It is true with both nikon and canon. However nikon have a history of great backward compatibility and canon change their mount too often. With Nikon you can use the lenses produced even in 70s!!

I think the Nikon camera you are talking about is either a D40 or D60. D60 has its own sensor cleaning mechanism. I feel that sensor cleaning is not a big issue, it is more of a marketing ploy. The AF incompatibility issue I was refering was that Nikons have two kind of Autofocusing mechanism 1. A camera driven and 2. Lens driven. Canons dont support camera driven lenses anymore but nikons do. D40 or D60 dont have a motor in the camera that allows the lens withoug on-lens motor for auto focusing. All the other cameras like nikon D80,D200,D300 have on camera motor. Advantage of having on camera motor is that you can use some truely magnificient lenses for pretty cheap of course with auto focus.

Anyway it is your personal choice at the end, and obviously the financing as well. I personally would suggest you
Nikon system for portraits and landscapes but if you want to go to canon , it is not a bad choice by any stretch of imagination. Just do what suits you the best.
