He is very heavily influenced by Al Pacino. If it was not for his string of failures at the box office right from his debut to a very good number of years after that, 'the angry young man' shade from Pacino wouldn't have rubbed off on him as much as it did and which he was able to portray very successfully in many of his flicks.

Michael Corleone of Godfather Trio or Vijay of Deewar or Shakti and Tony Montona of Scarface or Vijay Dinanath Chauhan of Agneepath, I don't see a lot of difference in the shades while I give full marks to AB for still being able to give some originality and tinges of local flavor to the characters which appealed his local/home fans.

That said, if you really want to watch his work in most original form:
1) Saudagar
2) Namak Halal....
3) Satte pe Satta..

and in few other off beat roles where he is more than just the angry young man, are worth an applause.
