You are right on that situation BUT it is not good if a tax preparer does a mistake in math. Its not good, if a tax preparer takes unallowed credits without knowing any details. Thats  what Bhandari Tax Service did to my friend that caused him to pay extra money. In the beginning, Bhandari made my friend happy showing him that he would get around $1500 refund. After couple months, my friend got a demanding letter from IRS asking him to $600 that includes penatly and interest. I would say my friend is lucky that I got notified by IRS soon. Imagine, if he gets caught after few year.
