since 2 weeks i am running into a problem in IE

i go google.com and search for things that i want to
along with my search, i get these nuisence commercial ads and shoppers details things and stuffs like that at the left corner of the page (window).
Again when i click my search topics my topic of interest donot appear at once, but instead some nonsense sites with commercials appear and i have to go back and click my topic again.

is it a virus problem
how can i get rid of all these
